Game 1: 7/16/21, 7:10 PM (Boston wins 4-0)

After game 1 of this series was postponed due to the Yankees having COVID-19 issues, the injury-riddled Yanks would start off on a bad note against the rival Red Sox. The bats had just 3 hits all night off Boston starter Eduardo Rodriguez who shut them down. New York starter, Jordan Montgomery, was exceptional as he tossed a quality start to give some length. His line: 6 innings, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K. The bullpen was on fire, besides Justin Wilson yet again as he gave up another run that kinda felt like a dagger in the back. DJ LeMahieu, Rougned Odor, and newly called up Greg Allen would each have a hit. JD Martinez and Christian Arroyo would each have a home run off Montgomery. Rodriguez would get the win for Boston and Montgomery would get the tough loss.

Game 2: 7/17/21, 8:05 PM (Yankees win 3-1)

New York took the rain like champs, taking the win by a score of 3-1. Gerrit was phenomenal, as he only gave up 1 run through a 6 inning complete game. The game started out with a 1 hour delay, then they would play through about an hour straight of downpours. I definitely didn’t think they would play through those downpours but I guess it turned out okay with no injuries and a Yankee win. Red Sox starter, Nathan Eovaldi, was great giving up 1 run through 5 innings. LeMahieu gave a 1 run courtesy RBI single in the 5th, tying the game at 1. Boston’s bullpen let them down as reliever Hirokazu Sawamura would come in and serve up back to back solo homers by Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres to make it a 3-1 lead. Thanks the the rain delay, that was all they needed. Cole got the win and Sawamura would get the loss.

Game 3: 7/18/21, 7:10 PM (Yankees win 9-1)

A series win against the first place Red Sox with an injury riddled team??!! Nobody would’ve thought that but the Bronx Bombers came out swinging on Sunday Night Baseball to win a laugher. Starter Jameson Tallion was yet again excellent. His line: 5.1 innings, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. All 3 of his July starts have been excellent leading to a 3-0 record. Boston starter Martin Perez was awful, giving up 3 runs over 4 innings and the bullpen behind him wasn’t better. Torres would get the Yankees on the board in the 2nd with a solo homer, he could be getting hot as he has 2 homers in 2 games when he previously had 3 in the last 70 85 games. In the 3rd, Giancarlo Stanton would hit into a fielders choice, scoring Allen making it 2-0 New York. In the 5th, Allen would continue his nice 2 game stretch with a sac fly making it 3-0. The 7th inning was the big inning for the Bombers as they plated 4, Odor started with a 2-run bomb over the bullpen on right field and then back to back bases loaded walks by Torres and Chris Gittins making it 7-0. Next inning, Boston would tack a run via Hunter Renfroe RBI single off Lucas Luetge. Yanks would get 2 more in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Ryan LaMarre 2-run blast to make it a 9-1 ball game. Yankees bullpen was excellent throwing 3.1 scoreless. Tallion would get the win and Perez would get the loss.

My thoughts:

Injury riddled team against the first place rival Red Sox and we take 2/3?! We can’t be upset with that. Huge series win with a bunch of minor leaguers on the roster, hopefully this gives them a lot of momentum as suddenly they’ve won 3 series in a row. We desperately need to start stringing together wins to make some ground.

What’s next?

Boston heads to upstate New York to take on the Blue Jays in a crucial 3 game set. The Yankees will stay home to take on the Philadelphia Phillies in a mini 2 game set. Welcome back former manager Joe Girardi and former shortstop Didi Gregorius. Keep winning series!
