Game 1 of DH: 8/17/21, 1:05 PM (Yanks win 5-3)

The Yankees escape with a game 1 victory over their rival, the Red Sox behind a clutch 5th inning rally. Starter Jordan Montgomery was decent in his 1st game back from the COVID IL. He gave up 3 runs in 4.2 innings pitched, had a shorter leash than usual since it was only a 7 inning game. Yanks opened up the scoring in the 2nd on a 2-run single from the Bronx kid, Andrew Valazquez, that’s gotta be an amazing feeling for him. Unfortunately, that 2-0 lead didn’t last too long as Xander Bogearts jumped on a Monty fastball for a 2-run single in the 3rd to tie things up. In the 5th, Boston would take a 3-2 lead thanks to a solo shot by Christian Vasquez. In the 5th, Yanks put together a string of amazing at bats showing plate discipline, awesome patience and even grabbed a pair of super clutch hits. Gardner, Judge, and Gallo all walked to set up bases loaded with 1 out, the next batter Luke Voit blooped a 2-run single to score Gardy and Judge and take a 4-3 lead. Giancarlo Stanton would pinch hit for Odor and smash a 116 MPH single to bring in Gallo and give them a 5-3 lead and that was all they needed. Loaisiga closed the door throwing 2 innings to pick up the save, he somehow escaped a bases loaded nobody out jam in the 7th without giving up a run. Impressive stuff! Abreu picked up the win and Garret Whitlock took the loss.

Game 2 of DH: 8/17/21, 7:05 PM (Yanks win 2-0)

Yanks win yet another closely competitive ballgame in game 2 of the doubleheader. At this point, they are officially tied for the 2nd wild card spot and tied for 2nd in the AL East. Starter Luis Gil unfortunately couldn’t go deep enough to get the win but he was great again. He hasn’t given up a run in 15.2 innings so far this season. It would’ve been nice to see the Yanks put up more runs but 2 runs got the job done. A solo homer by Voit and Stanton got the job done. Pretty much smooth sailing for the Yankee pitching staff in this game. Wandy Peralta picked up the win and Nathan Eovoldi took the loss.

Game 3: 8/18/21, 7:05 PM (Yanks win 5-2)

THAT IS A SWEEPPPP! Personally, I didn’t think the Yanks would pull this one off with Andrew Heaney pitching but he and the Yankees got the job done! Andrew Heaney (currently the CY Young favorite haha) pitched an absolute gem. He allowed 1 run over 7 innings of work to one of the best offensive teams in the league. Yanks fell behind in the 1st, but a 4 run 2nd inning put the game away. Gardy added a sac fly while Valazquez had an RBI single and Anthony Rizzo chipped in with a 2-run single to make it a 4-1 Yankee lead. In the 8th, Valazquez added another RBI single and that was the icing on the cake. Aroldis Chapman looked very rusty in his return from the COVID IL as he gave up a bomb to Hunter Renfroe but Lucus Leutge closed it out only needing to get 1 out. Heaney picked up the win and Nick Pivetta took the loss.

My thoughts:

After being completely out of the AL East race and 4.5 games out of the wild card, Yanks have gone 28-11 since the 4th of July Weekend and 23-8 since July 17th to officially leading the Wild Card race by a game and pull within 4.5 games of 1st place in the division race. I mean truly incredible stuff by the Bronx Bombers as they continue to win and have shown no signs of slowing down. Currently have a season high 6 game win streak and could stretch longer.

What’s next?

The struggling Red Sox head back home to Boston to welcome in the Texas Rangers for a 3 game set that they kinda have to sweep. The Yankees stay home and welcome the Minnesota Twins for a 4 game set. A Twins team who can score but can’t pitch and also a team the Yankees seem to never lose to. Stay hot!
